DANCE SPACES

STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS

The study of each classical dance form and its music in context with spatial quality and visual backdrop.
Interrelationship of dance, space and architecture

BACKGROUND ANALYSIS AND INFORMATION:

India being very rich in its culture and has various classical and folk dance forms and music. Over the
course of time, these dance forms practiced in the different parts of the country were codified and
developed distinct identities according to the geographic, socio-economic, and political conditions of each
region. The various types of Indian classical dances are Bharatanatyam, Kathak, kathakali, kuchipudi,
Manipuri, Mohiniattam, Odissi, Sattriya and Gaudi Nritya where some of them are accompanied by
classical music known as Carnatic music.

These dance forms were practiced as offerings or prayers to god and goddess, a way of storytelling and
also as entertainment for the kings or the rich. Hence Indian classical dances were performed in palaces,
natya mandir, temples, court rooms and city squares. The dance forms and architecture of these places
evolved simultaneously, are interrelated and form an indigenous element to depict and exhibit the grandeur
of the performance and feel of our culture.

But unfortunately, Indian classical dances have lost that backdrop of their performances as they are now
performed on modern day stages which are designed for the west. So no longer is the relevance,
complexity and essence of these dance forms evident to the spectators. Hence Indian culture is
deteriorating and losing its roots as today’s generation cannot relate to the culture. This has led to the
change even in the authentic classical dance forms and the spaces of its performance.

To revive these forms of art, the soul of the classical dance, music and its spaces is to be analyzed to
ensure that they are practiced in the right form to restore the traditions.
